Google Not Indexing Your Website? Here's the Real Diagnosis (and Where to Start)

When a website doesn't appear on Google, the first reaction is usually to think about SEO: keywords, backlinks, content. But often the problem comes before all of that. If Google hasn't indexed your pages, it's as if your website doesn't exist for them—and no positioning strategy will work until this is resolved.

I've seen this problem in restaurants in Born launching new websites, in clinics in Tarragona changing web providers, and in online shops in Sabadell that have been publishing content for months without receiving any organic visits. The pattern repeats itself. And it almost always has a solution in less than a week if you know where to look.

Indexing or positioning? First, distinguish the problem

Before doing anything, check in 10 seconds whether the problem is indexing or positioning. Open Google and type: site:yourdomain.com

  • No results appear: indexing problem. Google doesn't know you exist, or can't access your pages.
  • Pages appear but not for the keywords you want: positioning problem. Google knows you, but doesn't consider you relevant enough for those searches.

These are two completely different problems. Confusing them means wasting weeks working on the wrong thing. If the site: returns nothing—or returns much less than it should—keep reading.

Basic rule: First indexing, then positioning. A page that Google hasn't indexed can't appear in any search, no matter how good the content is or how many backlinks it has accumulated.

The real causes (ordered by frequency)

These are the causes I find most frequently when auditing websites. I order them by probability, not severity, because the first thing you need to do is rule out the most common ones:

  • 1. Noindex active by mistake (WordPress)
    The number one cause, by far. WordPress has a checkbox in Settings → Reading that says "Discourage search engines from indexing this site". It gets activated during development and often nobody deactivates it when publishing the website. Plus, plugins like Yoast or RankMath allow marking individual pages as noindex—sometimes unintentionally. A dental clinic in Tarragona I audited had been invisible to Google for four months for exactly this reason.

  • 2. Blocking in robots.txt
    The robots.txt file tells Googlebot which parts of the site it can crawl. A Disallow: / rule blocks the entire website. It's usually a leftover from the staging environment that nobody cleaned up when moving to production. The problem is it doesn't give any visible error: the website works perfectly for users, but Google can't get in.

  • 3. Thin or duplicate content
    Google may decide not to index pages it considers low value. It happens a lot in e-commerce: product sheets with descriptions copied from the supplier, categories with a single product, service pages with three sentences. If the content exists the same way elsewhere on the internet, Google has no reason to index your version.

  • 4. Parameterized URLs without canonical
    Search filters, UTM parameters, or user sessions that generate hundreds of variants of the same URL. Google sees them as duplicate pages and may stop indexing them all, including the original. In shops with filters for size, color, and season, this can multiply the number of URLs Google needs to process tenfold.

  • 5. Server errors (5xx) or redirect loops
    If the server returns a 500 or 503 error when Googlebot tries to access it, it abandons crawling and marks the page as unavailable. An overloaded hosting can generate this intermittently, which makes the problem especially hard to detect because the website seems to work fine when you open it.

  • 6. New website without sitemap or backlinks
    It's not a technical error, it's simply that Google doesn't know you exist. Without any backlink pointing to your website and without a sitemap submitted to Search Console, Googlebot may take weeks to discover you.

How to diagnose it in Search Console, step by step

Google Search Console is free and is the only tool that gives you Google's official version of your website's status. If you don't have it configured, that's the first thing you need to do—before anything else.

When I do an indexing audit, I always follow this order:

  1. Indexing → Pages: Here you see the summary of indexed and non-indexed pages, grouped by reason. Click on each reason (noindex, crawl blocked, duplicate page without canonical, redirected page…) to see which specific URLs are affected. The reason that appears with the most URLs is usually the main problem.

  2. URL Inspection: Enter any specific URL to find out if it's indexed, when it was last crawled, and if there are rendering errors. Very useful for confirming whether a change you just made has already been processed by Google. If the page isn't indexed, it will tell you exactly why.

  3. Settings → Robots.txt: Check that the file doesn't block anything it shouldn't. Pay special attention to whether there's a Disallow: / or blocking of critical folders like /wp-content/.

  4. Sitemaps: Verify that the sitemap.xml is submitted and that Google has processed it without errors. A sitemap that includes URLs with noindex or that return 404 is counterproductive: you're telling Google to visit pages you don't want indexed, or that no longer exist.

What I often discover in this process is that there isn't just one problem, but several at once. A noindex hiding a thin content problem, which in turn hides duplicate URLs. Solving only the visible layer doesn't fix anything long-term.

Solutions by priority order

Once you have the diagnosis, act in this order. There's no point working on content if there's a noindex active, or submitting the sitemap if robots.txt blocks crawling.

After each fix, use URL Inspection → Request indexing to notify Google that there's been a change. It's not a guarantee of anything, but on small and medium websites it usually speeds up the process.

Real errors I see on Catalan websites

More than theory, here are specific situations that appear again and again in audits:

  • Restaurants in Born and Gràcia changing websites: They launch a new domain, the designer makes them a beautiful website, and nobody configures 301 redirects from the old domain. Google loses the trail: authority, history, indexed pages. I've seen cases where organic traffic drops 70–80% overnight. The solution is simple, but it needs to be done before changing the domain, not after.

  • Girona shops with supplier catalogs: Importing product descriptions directly from the supplier is fast, but that same text already exists on dozens of other websites. Google doesn't index duplicate content that adds nothing new. The solution isn't to write more, it's to write differently: add local context, specific use cases, real customer reviews.

  • Tarragona clinics with hidden service pages: Pages of treatments or specialties that the designer marked as "private" or "draft" during development and were never properly published. Accessible to the user if they know the URL, but with noindex active for the bot. The result: pages that seem published but Google will never see.

  • Sabadell e-commerce with uncontrolled filters: A clothing shop with filters for size, color, and season can generate thousands of unique URLs. Without canonical or without selective blocking in robots.txt, Google's crawl budget gets diluted across worthless pages and the important pages—category and main product pages—either don't get indexed or get indexed very infrequently.
