How much does a website cost? In Spain, a simple website for a local business built by a professional usually falls between €400 and €1,200, a larger business site with more sections, a blog or its own design between €800 and €3,500, an online store between €2,000 and €8,000, and custom development starts at around €2,000 and can exceed €10,000 depending on features. These are indicative ranges: the real price depends on how many pages it has, who writes the copy and what the site has to do.

What follows helps you place your project in one of those bands before you talk to anyone, and explains why two suppliers can give you figures that differ by a factor of three.

How much a website costs by type

The type of site explains most of the price. This table shows the ranges the Spanish market usually moves in when the work is done by a professional or a small agency. They are not anyone's price list, just the order of magnitude you should expect.

Type of siteWhat it normally includesIndicative rangeUsual timescale
Single page (landing)One page with a contact form€250 – €7001-2 weeks
Simple local business siteUp to about 8 sections on an adapted template€400 – €1,2002-4 weeks

Top to bottom: single page, simple site, larger business site, online store and custom development; further right means higher cost.

Business website

This is what most small businesses need: about us, services, contact and perhaps a blog. A physiotherapist in Sabadell with five pages and the copy already written sits in the simple site band. An engineering firm in Tarragona that wants its own design, three languages and a page for every service is already a larger business site.

Online store

What makes a store expensive is not the design but everything that happens after the click on the buy button: payment gateway, taxes, shipping zones and costs, stock, returns and order emails. A winery in the Penedès with thirty products and a single shipping method is at the bottom of the band; a catalogue of two thousand products with variants and a connection to the management software reaches the top of the band or goes beyond it.

Custom website

We talk about custom development when the site has to do things no template does: an accountancy firm in Girona with a private area where each client downloads their documents, a booking system with its own rules, a quote configurator. Here you pay for programming, testing and maintenance of something that exists only for you. A single feature added to an ordinary site sits at the bottom; a full system with integrations easily exceeds €10,000.

What moves the price inside each band

Within the same band, the gap between floor and ceiling nearly always comes from these factors:

  • Number of pages and of different layouts. Twenty pages with the same structure cost far less than eight that are all different.
  • Own design or adapted template. Designing from scratch adds hours of design and front-end work.
  • Copy and photos. If you supply them, the price drops. If they have to be written and shot, that is a separate line.
  • Languages. Each language adds translation, review and configuration, not just duplicated pages.
  • Features. Bookings, payments, client area, search with filters.
  • Integrations. Connecting the site to invoicing software, a CRM or an ERP tends to be the least predictable line.
  • Baseline SEO and migration. If you already have a site with traffic, its addresses must be carried over with redirects so they are not lost.
  • Content loading. Uploading five hundred products with photo and description is real work, even if it is not technical.
Key pointBefore asking for a price, list every page the site will have and say who will write the copy. With just those two facts, the figure you get will be far more reliable.

Why it changes depending on who builds it

The same brief can get very different prices without anyone misleading you. A freelancer works with less overhead and usually lands in the lower half of each band. An agency splits the work between design, development and content, adds project management and usually lands in the upper half. Neither option is better by definition: it depends on whether you need one agile person or a team covering more disciplines.

What you do need to compare is what each figure covers. For that, see the guide on what a website quote should include, with the line items and the warning signs.

How much it costs to build a website yourself

With a subscription website builder, creating a website yourself usually costs between €150 and €400 a year, hosting included. The part that is not on the price list is your time: choosing a template, writing copy, preparing photos and setting everything up easily adds up to several dozen hours.

In my view it is worth it when you are starting out, the budget is very tight and the site is simple. It stops being worth it when you need the site to bring in customers from Google and have no time to learn how: a site nobody finds is expensive even if it cost little. If you want to know what it takes to show up, there is the guide on how to rank a website on Google step by step.

What you pay every year afterwards

Besides building it, a website has recurring costs: domain (€10-30 a year), hosting (€60-300 a year on a good shared plan) and maintenance (from €15-60 a month on a basic plan). The detail of what each plan covers is in the article on website maintenance cost.

Mistakes when working out the cost of a website

  • Comparing only the total. A €700 price with no copy, no baseline SEO and no training is not cheaper than a €1,100 one that includes everything.
  • Forgetting the content. Many sites are delayed for months because nobody planned who would write the copy.
  • Not asking who owns the domain. The domain and the hosting must be in your name, not the supplier's.
  • Paying for features just in case. A store or private area you will not use in the first year can be added later.
  • Ignoring the old site. Switching sites without redirects can wipe out the traffic you already had.

How to tell which band you are in

Answer these four questions and you will know your band before calling anyone:

  1. How many different pages do you need? Up to eight, a simple site; more pages, a blog or its own design, the next band.
  2. Do you need to take payment through the site? If so, you are in the online store band.
  3. Does the site need to talk to other software or have users with passwords? Then it is custom development.
  4. Who writes the copy and supplies the photos? If it is not you, add that line.

For reference, at posicionament-web the basic website has a fixed price of €490, professional website design starts at €990 and custom web development at €2,490. Frequently asked questions

How much does a simple website cost for a sole trader?

A simple site of up to about eight sections usually falls between €400 and €1,200. If you only need one page with a form, the range drops to €250-700.

How much does it cost to create an online store?

A standard store is usually between €2,000 and €8,000. The price rises with the number of products, variants, shipping methods and the connection to management software.

Why are there €300 websites and €10,000 websites?

Because they are not the same product. The €300 one is a template with your copy; the €10,000 one includes its own design, specific programming, testing and integrations.

Does the price include the domain and hosting?

It depends on the supplier. Many include the first year and it is renewed separately afterwards. Ask for it in writing and for the domain to be in your name.

In short: place the type of site first, then count pages and features, and ask for a price with that list in hand. If you want a second opinion on the site you have or the one being proposed, start with the initial analysis.
